Defense forces, as part of critical infrastructure, represent one of the driving forces of
technological advancement, while 5G networks introduce significant innovations in the field of
modern communications. The motivation for researching this topic, stems from an interest in
the military domain and the new possibilities enabled by 5G technology. The aim of this thesis
is to present the characteristics, technologies and architecture of 5G networks, as well as to
evaluate whether the key functionalities of the network are suitable for defense applications.
The thesis begins with an overview of the development of 5G networks and the main
innovations they introduce, including integration with satellite communications. Furthermore,
the thesis presents functionalities particularly suitable for defense purposes, where private
networks and network slicing play an important role. This is followed by use cases of 5G
technology in the defense sector. Finally, the thesis concludes with an analysis of the limitations
and challenges of 5G networks for defense purposes, as 5G technology, due to its advanced
functionalities, represents a major step forward in the development of the defense sector.
