In this bachelor's thesis we explored and practically tested the possibilities of integrating authorial digital photography and 360-degree video within an augmented reality environment. The aim of the research was to develop an interactive AR gallery in which the visitor, using Meta Quest 3 headsets, experiences four thematic sets (winter, autumn, summer, and spring) that combine static authorial photographs and dynamic 360-degree videos.
For the execution we used the Sony α7 IV mirrorless camera with three lenses: Sony FE 35 mm f/1.8 GM for wider environmental shots, Sony FE 50 mm f/1.8 GM as a universal lens, and Sony FE 85 mm f/1.8 GM for close-up portraits with beautiful background blur. 360-degree videos were captured with the Insta360 X4 camera. Post-production was carried out in Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Photoshop, and Insta360 Studio. The entire interactive experience was developed in Unity 2022.3 LTS using the XR Interaction Toolkit and Meta XR All-in-One SDK. Digital content was permanently anchored in physical space using spatial anchors. The exhibition was installed at the ArtRebel 9 gallery in Ljubljana.
The success of the project was evaluated through an anonymous survey with 56 visitors. The results showed an exceptionally positive reception: the overall experience was rated with an average score of 9.6 out of 10. 66 percent of respondents highlighted the 360-degree videos as the most interesting element, while 73 percent felt that augmented reality contributes to a deeper emotional experience and understanding of the content. More than half of the visitors rated the AR exhibition as better than a traditional photographic exhibition.
We concluded that augmented reality can successfully enhance the presentation of photography and create a stronger spatial and emotional experience. The project demonstrated both the theoretical and practical value of using augmented reality technology in art, while also pointing out technical challenges such as the sharpness of 360-degree videos and the ergonomics of wearing the headsets.
