The database contains spatial data on selected types of recreational infrastructure in Slovenia, specifically information on the location of facilities, with additional attributes included in some cases. It primarily covers outdoor recreational infrastructure. Most of the data reflect the situation in 2023 and 2024, while for natural climbing sites, the data reflect the situation in 2025. The data were collected as part of the basic research project “Spatial Management, and Status of Recreational Infrastructure and Recreational Habits in the Context of Social Changes in the Last Three Decades” (J7-4598). The project examined the state and changes in recreational infrastructure and recreational habits in Slovenia in relation to issues of spatial planning and management.
Recreational infrastructure is important for providing opportunities for quality leisure time, yet data on it are severely lacking. To gain insight into the prevalence and distribution of specific types of recreational infrastructure, we created our own digital spatial database, which primarily covers infrastructure for outdoor recreation. This includes infrastructure for some of the most popular recreational activities in Slovenia (hiking, cycling), partly infrastructure for activities engaged in by a very narrow segment of the population (e.g., marinas, sports airports), and partly infrastructure for commercially oriented activities in the field of so-called adventure recreation (e.g., ziplines, adventure/adrenaline parks…). Although the database refers only to part of the recreational infrastructure, it covers most of the infrastructure that is spatially more demanding and located outside built-up areas. Each type of recreational infrastructure is presented as a separate layer. A total of 20 layers are included. Data layers that were directly sourced from other sources for the project’s analyses are not included in this database, though basic information about them is provided. The data reflect the situation at the time of collection and are subject to constant change.
