The master’s thesis analyses active ageing in the Municipality of Slovenska Bistrica and focuses on understanding the needs of older people, the characteristics of the local environment, and the role of existing support resources in enabling and promoting active ageing. In the theoretical part of the research, I present the topics of population ageing and demographic changes, social networks of older people and their social inclusion, as well as the theoretical framework of active ageing and social work with older people. The aim of the research was to explore how active ageing is realized in the Municipality of Slovenska Bistrica, through which factors and support resources the concept of active ageing is enabled or limited, and what role organizations and institutions in the local community play in this process. Particular attention was paid to the role of the Pensioners’ Association of Slovenska Bistrica in strengthening active ageing among its members. The empirical part of the study is based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, integrated through the Rapid Assessment of Needs and Services methodology, which enabled a comprehensive overview of the research field. By preparing a community profile and reviewing existing services, I identified the key actors operating in the local community in the field of helping older people. Empirical data were collected through two focus groups in which representatives and members of the Pensioners’ Association shared their perspectives and visions regarding ageing in Slovenska Bistrica. The triangulation of all collected data showed that the needs of older people in the field of active ageing are multidimensional and are primarily experienced through everyday life, independence, and mobility. The local environment that shapes and provides opportunities for active ageing offers a diverse and extensive network of services and support resources, which are well recognized and accepted in Slovenska Bistrica. The results indicate that the accessibility of services and information in the local community is well ensured for residents. Participants assessed Slovenska Bistrica as an environment in which opportunities for active ageing are well provided; however, participation largely depends on individual interests and preferences. The role of the Pensioners’ Association of Slovenska Bistrica proved to be particularly important, especially in the field of advocacy, as its representatives clearly and actively represent the interests of older people in the municipality and strive to improve their position at both the local and national levels. The findings also highlight the importance of promoting activity, knowledge transfer, education on current topics, and the strengthening of volunteerism.
