The Škofja Loka Hills are a pre-Alpine geographical region in northwestern Slovenia, located between of the Selška and Poljanska Sora rivers. The region has a very rich developmental history and a diverse geological composition. It is made up of limestones, dolomites, conglomerates, and contains significant amounts of claystones, sandstones, and shales, with marl in some areas as well.
Using X-ray powder diffraction, I performed qualitative and quantitative analyses on 14 rock samples collected from the Škofja Loka Hills area. To support the analysis, we also examined some samples with a scanning electron microscope, through which we carried out elemental analysis.
Qualitative phase analysis was performed using the program Crystallographica Search-Match, where I compared the diffractograms of the samples with standard reference diffractograms to determine their phase composition. For some samples, not all present phases could be identified, since a few very weak diffraction peaks did not provide sufficient certainty to confirm the presence of a phase in the sample.
Quantitative phase analysis was conducted in Topas using the Rietveld method, which enabled me to determine the mass fractions, i.e., the mass ratios, of the identified phases.
I identified several different minerals and found that quartz is the most widespread in the Škofja Loka Hills. In addition to quartz, I also identified calcite, dolomite, fluorite, and several silicate minerals. I compared samples collected from the same parts of the Škofja Loka Hills and observed how the proportion of individual minerals changes with altitude. Finally, I compared my findings with the Geological Map of Slovenia.
