African cooking ware from the 2021 underwater excavations at Fizine (Slovenia)

This article examines African cooking ware uncovered during recent underwater excavations of the Late Roman phase of the ancient settlement complex at Fizine (Slovenia). The study aims to provide reliable qualitative and quantitative data on their forms, extent, and origin through a technological and typo-chronological framework. The assemblage comprises both Central and North Tunisian products, with a notable predominance of North Tunisian examples, while a small number may be linked to regional workshops. Their chronological range spans from the mid-3rd to the mid-5th century, with most specimens dating to the 4th and early 5th centuries. The African cooking ware was primarily found as part of a larger concentration of material in an area likely serving as a mooring for smaller fishing and trading vessels during the Late Roman period, suggesting the presence of anchorage debris.
