Introduction: Mental health issues among adolescents have been increasing in recent years,
and the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated them. Anxiety disorders are the most
common mental disorders in adolescence. Risk factors for the development of these
disorders can be divided into socio-demographic, family, psychological, and biological
factors. Anxiety is the brain's response to danger or stimuli that the body consciously tries
to prevent. Yoga, which is based on establishing balance between the body, breath, and mind,
could provide both mental and physical benefits to adolescents with symptoms of anxiety
disorders. Yoga improves well-being, strengthens self-image, and reduces negative
behaviours in adolescents. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to determine the effect
of yoga on adolescents with anxiety disorders. Methods: For the thesis, a literature review
was conducted in the PubMed database. Studies published after 2012 that described the
effect of yoga on adolescents with symptoms of anxiety disorders were selected. Freely
accessible articles in English were reviewed, using the keywords: “yoga” and “adolescents”
and “anxiety”. Results: The literature review included four studies, with a total of 233
participants. In three studies, the experimental group received yoga training, and in one,
adolescents practiced a yoga-based mind sound resonance technique. Interventions lasted
from two to twelve weeks. Each session lasted from 30 to 60 minutes, or the duration wasn't
specified. The frequency of the workouts also differed. Participants received one to seven
sessions per week. Two studies found a statistically significant reduction in anxiety, while
the other two found no statistically significant differences among adolescents with anxiety
disorders. Discussion and conclusion: Research has shown a relatively meaningful impact
of yoga on adolescents with symptoms of anxiety disorders. Despite this, only a limited
number of studies focus exclusively on this topic. It would be useful to conduct future
research that examines the long-term effects of yoga on anxiety disorder symptoms in
adolescents and studiesthat use uniform measurement tools, as this would make the results
more comparable.
