This article presents the status of the novel in the new, changed circumstances of transition and post-communism, with special emphasis on Slovenian and Croatian novel production after 2000. In the light of the social marginalization of literature and consumer culture, or in the context of the specific conditions of societies in transition, the article presents research on changes that influence the modern novel, its status, and its position in the literary field. In addition, the article also deals with the transitional articulation of the contemporary Slovenian and Croatian novel; namely, with regard to the formation and mediation of themes of political and social transition, as well as the novel’s contribution to formulating the image of the transitional literary field and the transitional state in general.
