The master thesis deals with the development of industry in Ilirska Bistrica in the second half of the 20th century and its impact on the economic, social and environmental development of the town. Particular emphasis is placed on the companies Lesonit and the Organic Acids Factory (TOK), which significantly influenced the economic image of the town. The work analyses the organisation, growth and importance of these industrial plants, while also highlighting the role of collective spirit, the loyalty of the employees and their daily lives. Through specialist literature, newspaper articles and interviews with former employees, the process of modernisation, social security and cultural life offered to the workers by these two factories is illustrated. The research also touches upon the pollution issues of the time, in particular the River Reka, and the local environment's reactions to the industrial impact. The work also offers insights into the transformation of Ilirska Bistrica after the Second World War, and thus shows in general how industry shaped the economic development, social relations and environmental challenges of the place.
