Magistrsko delo obsega analizo, izdelavo in testiranje dislektikom primerne črkovne vrste Dixi, ki je obenem tudi spremenljiva. Pogosto spregledana motnja disleksije je v svetovni populaciji razširjena na med 5 in 10 % ljudi. Ti posamezniki se vsak dan srečujejo s težavami, tako pri branju in zapisu kot tudi sluhu in govoru. Vse to so osnovne veščine sporazumevanja, zato je ključnega pomena olajšati simptome. Branje je tesno povezano z obliko besedila in pisave, v kateri je upodobljeno. Vendar je vprašanje, kako točno oblika pisave vpliva na branje pri dislektikih, še neodgovorjeno. V teoretičnem delu je najprej predstavljen kognitivni proces branja in vplivi nanj. Temu sledi pregled simptomov in teorij disleksije. V nadaljevanju sledi pregled tipografskih osnov, ki so ključnega pomena za izdelavo pisave. Razumevanje tega nam je podalo dobro razumevanje ciljnih uporabnikov oblikovane pisave. V zadnjem delu teoretičnega poglavja smo pregledali različne študije, ki so analizirale pisave oblikovane za dislektike. Sledil je še pregled smernic za oblikovanje takih pisav in analiza že uveljavljenih pisav, namenjenih tej ciljni skupini. V eksperimentalnem delu so opisani postopki ter metode dela, ki so potrebni za izdelavo in testiranje pisave Dixi. Tu smo najprej postopoma obrazložili postopek oblikovanja pisave ter vse značilnosti njenih različic. Sledi opis oblikovanja testiranja in njihovih končnih rezultatov. Na koncu smo predstavili še implementacijo pisave v grafike in animacije, ki bodo na družbenih omrežjih služile njeni promociji. V magistrskem delu je bilo ugotovljeno, da vse lastnosti že oblikovanih pisav za dislektike ne prinašajo vedno tudi boljših rezultatov pri branju. Najboljše rezultate pogosto prikažejo linearne pisave, oblikovane za namen čim boljše čitljivosti. Zato je spremenljivost pisave med enostavnimi in bolj kompleksnimi različicami pomembna lastnost, ki bi lahko v prihodnje omogočala individualno prilagoditev oblike črkovnih znakov vsakemu bralcu.

Naslov:Designing Variable Typeface for Standard and Dyslexia-Friendly Reading

This thesis encompasses the analysis, design, and testing of the typeface Dixi, a variable font specifically designed to support readers with dyslexia. The often overlooked disorder of dyslexia is present in between 5 % and 10 % of the world’s population. These individuals face daily difficulties in reading and writing as well as in hearing and speech. All of these are basic communication skills, therefore, it is of key importance to reduce the symptoms. Reading is closely connected to the form of text and the typeface in which it is represented, however, the question of how exactly the form of typefaces influences reading in dyslexic readers remains unanswered. In the theoretical part, the cognitive process of reading and its influences are first presented. This is followed by an overview of the symptoms and theories of dyslexia. Further on, a review of the typographic fundamentals, which are significant for type design, are presented. These understanding gave us a good basis regarding the target users of our typeface. In the last part of the theoretical chapter, we reviewed different studies that analysed typefaces designed for dyslexics. This was followed by a review of guidelines for designing such typefaces and an analysis of already established typefaces intended for this target group. In the experimental part, the procedures and working methods necessary for the development and testing of the Dixi typeface are described. Here, the design process is first explained step by step, followed by the description of all characteristics of the typeface variants. This is followed by the outline of testing and its results. At the end, we presented the implementation of the typeface in graphics and animations, which in the future will serve for promotional purposes. In the master’s thesis, it was found that not all characteristics of already designed typefaces for dyslexics necessarily bring better results in reading. The best results are often shown by sans-serif typefaces designed with the aim of achieving the highest possible legibility. Therefore, the variability of the typeface between simpler and more complex versions is an important feature, which allows the individual adaptation of the letterform shapes to each reader.
