In this BA thesis, we examine the design of modular typefaces through the lens of legibility and visual systems. Throughout the thesis, our main research interest will be the overcoming of rigidity and static qualities in typeface design. The main topic of our research is modularity, but we devote a lot of attention to flexible visual systems, grids as tools, and theories of legibility and readability as well. Through the study of relevant theoretical and practical works, we define rules that serve as a method for designing a modular typeface. In the practical part of the thesis, the central challenge we are constantly dealing with is the limit of legibility or illegibility of individual cha racters. We learn about the advantages and limitations of such modular typefaces and the impact on our own design practice.
