Organizations often face challenges of ineffective approaches to adopt and measure the progress of DevOps practices. Even though both quantitative and qualitative approaches to measure success exist, teams still might lack a holistic view of maturity and adoption progress. We have developed an approach that enables teams and organizations to adopt DevOps practices in a holistic and reliable way. In a case study, we demonstrated an approach that guides from the initial and target state analysis, to implementation of improvements and progress measurement. The approach is based on the principles of data-driven decisions, continuous monitoring and improvement. It combines system metrics with stakeholder feedback. We have shown that a detailed initial analysis of processes, design of a survey questionnaire and the creation of an automatic metric logging system simplifies the process of continuous monitoring and improvement. The adoption of automated infrastructure provisioning and the optimization of a continuous integration process has a positive impact on feedback loop time, provisioning times and team confidence during the process of software development.
