The master’s thesis examines the uncontrollable wildfire in the Slovenian Karst in July 2022, which remains the largest recorded wildfire in Slovenia’s history. The thesis aims to redesign the roadside landscape between Opatje selo and Kostanjevica na Krasu to function as an efficient frebreak. Cleared roadside zones will be repurposed for native plant cultivation and sustainable forest management. A firebreak corridor will be designed to connect two villages, incorporating farmland to expand the fre suppression area. Through interviews, the study identifies strengths and weaknesses in wildfire defense strategies, analyzes the fire’s origins, and proposes improved preparedness measures for the future. Critical to this approach is the integration of open-space maintenance, accessibility, and strategic clearings, which collectively enhance control over potential wildfires.
