Background: Dementia is increasingly prevalent, presenting a major societal, economic, and global health challenge. As the disease progresses, family caregivers play a growing role in helping people with dementia (PwDs) with activities of daily living. With advancing dementia, PwD experiences worsening symptoms, requiring more caregiver involvement, which can lead to negative effects on caregivers' health, including burden, anxiety, depression, and sleep deprivation. Intelligent assistive technology (IAT) is believed to alleviate some of these challenges.
Method: This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from various research fields addressing the key research question: "Does intelligent assistive technology work?". The initial literature on technology and people with dementia provided the necessary vocabulary for more focused searches. By developing a set of search terms and following a structured research strategy, I could frame the topic as a clinical and cognitive phenomenon. This approach led to several rounds of search iterations, ultimately refining the final query to include keywords related to interdisciplinarity, cognitive science paradigms on the organization of the mind, and human-centered design models.
Conclusion: The usability of technologies is rarely comprehensively assessed, resulting in tools that may not effectively meet the needs of both people with dementia and their caregivers. This issue is reflected in the current human readiness levels of IATs, suggesting that these technologies are not fully developed or ready for practical use. A critical challenge is that IATs are often not designed to adapt to the progressive nature of dementia, which impacts their effectiveness as the disease advances. Without the necessary adaptability, IATs risk becoming obsolete or even problematic for users. Additionally, the terminology used, such as "intelligent assistance," often lacks clarity and practical demonstration, creating a gap between the technology's promises and its actual performance. The current methods for assessing IAT usability also need significant improvement to ensure these technologies are user-friendly and capable of addressing the unique needs of PwD and their caregivers.
