Antikristi are an ultras group that supports sports teams from the Metlika municipality. This master thesis puts football ultras in a societal context using the example of football fans on the economic and geographic margins. In the chapter “History of Antikristi from Metlika” it shows the connection between the narrativity of football fans and oral history through the conceptual apparatus of epistemology of historiography developed by Marc Bloch, Luisa Passerini, Alun Munslow and others. It asks questions about the relation between memory and history, past and present. The thesis tries to answer this question through 12 ethnographic interviews, which then compares with written sources about Antikristi activities. The relation between written and oral testimonies reveals the mode of formation of historic memory, which serves above all in the function of giving meaning to our own life. In the chapter “The Sociology of Antikristi from Metlika” the thesis establishes an understanding of football ultras as a subculture, which begs the question about the usefulness of subcultures and tribes as a concept in contemporary subculture theories. Football ultras as a subculture act in the framework of societal fields as developed by Pierre Bourdieu, where they function as an agent in the struggle for different capitals. Ultras function as rebels against football cultural hegemony, which is expressed through the against modern football movement. In the context of Metlika, this is connected with the rejection of Slovenian nationalism and state authorities, as well as having strong local identification. This raises questions about ultras' social power and ability to influence social changes based on their geographical and economic situation.
