The thesis deals with poetic art, its governing principles, and the nature of the language, which constitutes the guiding thread of his poetics. Drawing on his essays, I have illustrated his views on the nature of poetry. I have also explored Valéry's views on philosophy and science, relying in this respect on his Notebooks (Cahiers). I have sought to show the influence of scientific theories and conceptual frameworks on the investigation of mental processes, which lie at the core of his interests. I presented a synthesis of his epistemological positions on the poem »Angel«, which represents the purest image of his lifelong process of exploring the nature of comprehension.
