This thesis examines the life and work of p. Benvenut Crobath (1805–1880), a Franciscan monk, poet, and contemporary of France Prešeren, focusing on his third manuscript (Rokopis III), rediscovered in 2023 in the Ljubljana Franciscan Library. Through analysis of manuscript Latin biographies, German and Slovenian poems, we explore Crobath’s literary output, his views on the national movement, and his connection with Prešeren. Employing transcription and contextual analysis, the study highlights his Biedermeier poetry, reflecting monastic life, criticism of Slavomania, and loyalty to Habsburg Carniola. The work compares Crobath’s poetry with Romantic and Enlightenment influences, emphasizing his classical education and priestly mission. Findings suggest that, while not reaching Prešeren’s artistic heights, Crobath is significant for understanding 19th-century Carniolan cultural identity. The thesis contributes to reviving interest in Crobath’s legacy and raises questions about further research into his lost manuscripts.
