The thesis discusses the Italian ethnic minority in the municipality of Izola. More specifically, it examines its division into various organisations and how members of the minority connect through various associations and communities within these organisations. By doing so, they exercise their minority rights and engage in cultural activities. The thesis consists of a geographical overview of Slovene Istria and the municipality of Izola, as well as a history of the area. It presents the protection of minorities and minority education. The core of the thesis consists of the presentation of minority organisations within the municipality and their most active fields, with a discussion of the general operation of the community. Izola is unique among the coastal towns, as it is home to two separate Italian communities (Comunità degli Italiani – CI Pasquale Besenghi degli Ughi and CI Dante Alighieri). Both are active and organise various clubs and events. They are particularly strong in the fields of visual arts and music. They attract interest from both members of the minority and the wider local community. Their main goal is to preserve their language, culture and traditions, which they consistently achieve.
