In this thesis, I analyze the role of the narrator in two contemporary Slovenian novels – Da me je strah? by Maruša Krese and Druga preteklost by Vinko Möderndorfer. The theoretical part focuses on the development of the narrator in literary theory and presents established typologies of narrators. In the following chapters, I examine the narrators in the selected novels and attempt to classify them according to typological criteria. My main interest lies in how the narrator, as a central construct, influences the structure and interpretation of the novel. I find that both novels include multiple narrators who differ in terms of reliability, grammatical person, and perspective. Due to their themes, genre hybridity, and complex narrative structure, both novels can be regarded as representative examples of contemporary slovenian fiction.
