Lacquerware has a longstanding artistic tradition in Japan, but its role can also be noticed in international trade. Trade between Japan and Europe was quite important due to many enthusiasts of East Asian artworks in general. Here, the question about the role of Japanese lacquerware in European possession came to my mind and is also what I try to answer in my thesis. I did not include the Meiji period or any of the later ones as the length of the thesis would have been to much. Because of high demand for Japanese lacquer in Europe I also focus on the influence of European demand for these items on their production in Japan.
