In the following thesis we discuss the works of Oton Župančič, his literary outlook, and circumstances of the origin of his five-act tragedy. Firstly, we present the literary period, the historical background of the city of Celje during the era of the Counts of Celje, and the occurrence of their subject in literature. Secondly, we examine the extent of Veronika Deseniška’s motif in Slovenian and foreign literature. We conclude with an analysis of Župančič's Veronika Deseniška and its main characters, and a comparison with works by other authors who also addressed the said subject.
