In my thesis, I address the question of how well students of Slovenian language and literature
know word formation before they encounter this topic in their university program, i.e., what
prior knowledge they bring with them from secondary school. First, I present the treatment of
word formation in selected high school materials and outline the essential differences in the
treatment of this field in university studies. In the central part, I analyse the results of word
formation tasks from a questionnaire I conducted among second-year students of Slovenian
studies. I therefore focus on the knowledge of basic word formation skills and concepts, such
as the formation of compounds, types of word formation, word formation and syntactic bases,
affixes, the formation of adjectives, and the orthography of compounds.
