The term social security refers to systems through which individuals and families are guaranteed rights to benefits in order to ensure conditions for living in dignity and welfare. The provided benefits are designed to address social risks, which are uncertain and future events that may affect an individual or family and cause harm due to loss of income or the incurrence of healthcare costs, upon their occurrence, these risks materialize into what is legally referred to as a social contingency. This master’s thesis focuses on the social security of single-parent families and it also outlines the legal and social position of (single-parent) families in Slovenia. Single-parent families represent one of the socially vulnerable groups that face numerous challenges, such as poverty, difficulties in accessing employment, and a lack of social support networks that are explored in greater detail in the thesis. The thesis presents the legal framework and an overview of rights to which members of single-parent families are entitled within the social security system, including those deriving from social insurance schemes, family benefits, social assistance, and social advantages. The emphasis is also placed on the inadequacy of the current legislation and legal frameworks in addressing the specific position of single-parent families, as existing legislation often does not adapt to the specific situation of single-parent families and challenges they face.
