In this thesis, I examine the theory of contemporary fantasy novels, which I apply comparatively to two modern fantasy novels: Imaginary Worlds of Edgar Kaos (2021) by Slovenian author Julija Lukovnjak and Eragon (2002) by American author Christopher Paolini. I analyse the two novels through the aspects of scope, deviation from consensual reality, style, character, awareness of unreality, time and place of events, and complexity of motives. I then focus on the mentioned aspects in the context of good and evil in both novels and connect them primarily to the heroic figure and the character of the dragon.
