In my master's thesis, I researched a specific area of occupational safety and health that is increasingly present in the workplace today, namely chemical safety. I have studied the European and Slovenian legislation which is the basis for enabling the control of safety at the workplace in the event of exposure to chemical substances. Awareness of the potential risks of handling chemicals is an area well supported by a variety of methods by which the employer can assess the risk, as mandated by Slovenian legislation. I have looked in detail at two different methods for risk assessment of chemicals, called AUVA and EMKG, each of which I have studied in more detail and presented in the theoretical part.
The safety and health field has been developing rapidly in recent years, supported by digitalisation. This has made it possible to monitor data in this specific area, including chemical safety, more clearly, quickly and accurately. I have been introduced to the Quentic software scheme, which allows the integration of different OSH modules - from hazardous substances data management to risk assessment and regulatory reporting.
In the experimental part of the MSc thesis, I carried out the practical part of two chemical risk assessment methods (AUVA and EMKG) on the example of the chemical Elan Protect UP 142, which is used as an impregnation varnish for the rotors of electric motors at BSH d.o.o.. I carried out the risk assessment taking into account the actual process, quantities and time exposure of employees, and included a demonstration of the use of Quentic, the company's digital chemical safety management system.
