The thesis analyses the dynamics of vegetation in the Goriški Kras region after the largest forest
fire in the history of Slovenia, which occurred in July 2022. The forest fire affected more than
3,700 ha of land. The objective was to assess the recovery of vegetation using remote sensing
techniques. We used Sentinel-2 satellite images for different time periods before and after the
fire and calculated vegetation (NDVI, MSAVI) and fire indices (NBR) based on this. We then
compared their values in areas with different degrees of vegetation cover. The analysis was
carried out at the level of the entire fire site and on selected sample plots. The results of our
analyses show that vegetation recovers spatially differently due to differences in initial damage
and recovery mechanisms. There are clear differences between reforested areas and areas where
natural succession has taken place. Remote sensing allows effective monitoring of post-fire
vegetation recovery and identification of areas that are recovering more or less successfully.
Recommendations for further research include continued monitoring of vegetation recovery
over a long period of time, verification of results through field work and additional research on
the impact, spread and effectiveness of preventative measures to reduce the presence of invasive
alien plant species.
