The topic of this thesis is the interplay of functional and aesthetic elements in the buildings of Catalan Modernism. We will analyse how the architects of this period combined innovative aesthetic solutions with advanced functional concepts in their works. In addition, we will focus on residential and public buildings and analyse in more detail the works of Antoni Gaudí, namely Casa Milá and Casa Batlló. Furthermore, we will point out public buildings such as the Hospital de Sant Pau and the Palau de la Música Catalana by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. We will also explore the influence of the social and technological changes of that period on the development of these architectural approaches.
