In this master thesis, we analyzed the structure of the clay pastes used to make ceramic items
found at OŠ Mengeš – Stara telovadnica with the use of ceramic petrography. The first part of
the thesis consists of a macroscopic study of the ceramic items found during archaeological
excavations at the site in the years 2021 and 2022. The second part of the thesis is the
petrographic analysis of the ceramic samples. The samples were chosen based on the results of
the macroscopic study. The focus of this study is on the tempers added to the clay during clay
paste preparation and the structure of the clay used to make the ceramic items. For comparison,
we also sampled wild clay from the local area. The locations at which the clay samples were
gathered were chosen according to the geological map, laser scanning images (LiDAR), and
toponyms connected to clay.
