As part of my thesis, I decided to examine the use of the sketchbook in an artistic and art pedagogical practice. I researched what a sketchbook is, its role in the history of fine art, and its place today in the art world; an environment with more media access and expressive possibilities than any artist has ever had before. I focused on the importance of drawing as the primary art field in connection with the sketchbook. I analysed my own use of the sketchbook and how it supports an art pedagogy student in developing both artistic skills and personal expression. After reviewing the literature on the sketchbook as a pedagogical tool, I provided an overview of its potential and offered suggestions for introducing the sketchbook into Fine Arts lessons in elementary schools, supported by a SWOT analysis.
