When designing modern, functional cattle barns that are animal-, environment-, and farmer-friendly, it is important to take zootechnical standards into account. These form the basis for creating an environment that offers the animals comfort and enables the expression of species-specific behavioural needs. At the same time, the burden on the farmer should be reduced by enabling safer and less physically demanding work that can be carried out with greater satisfaction. The first part of this paper presents the elements and factors that need to be considered in the design of cattle housing. The second part presents a concept for the remodelling and extension of a barn for suckler cows, calves, and young cattle on the family farm Mežnarč. The existing barn is outdated and no longer meets modern animal husbandry requirements. With the realisation of this project, we want to build a barn on the farm that will provide better living conditions for the animals and make work easier and more manageable for family members. The old part of the barn will be used for calves and breeding heifers, while the newly built part of the barn will house 13 suckler cows. Due to limited financial resources and the availability of wood from the farm's own forest, the above-ground part of the barn will be predominantly made of wood, which will simplify construction and reduce investment costs.
