In my thesis I firstly present two socially marginalized groups: the erased residents of Slovenia (a group of residents, whose citizenship and civil rights were taken away by the Slovenian country) and gastarbeiters (workers with temporary and usually lower paid jobs in foreign countries), which are represented in the novels The Fig Tree (2016) by Goran Vojnović and Bonavia (2014) by Dragan Velikić, both of which I analyse. I also analyse the two characters belonging to the groups, Safet and Miljan, and their experience. Then I present their relationship with their sons, Jadran and Marko. After that, I focus on memory and the types of memory, which are: collective, individual and historical. These are then analysed in the context of both novels, how they are represented and their influence on the characters, the development of their identities and the relationships between them.
