Two compounds were prepared by reactions with nicotinamide (nia = C$_6$H$_6$N$_2$O) and trans-ferulic acid (FA = C$_{10}$H$_{10}$O) from various starting Co(II) compounds, in Co(II) : nia: FA = 1 : 2 : 2 molar ratio. All reactions were carried out in a solvent prepared by ethanol and deionized water in equal volume proportions. Both resulting compounds were further characterized using selected methods.
Compound 1, Co(A)$_2$(nia)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_x$ (x = 2 oz. 3; A = C$_{10}$H$_9$O$^-$), was obtained from CoCl$_2$·6H$_2$O (Sample 1), Co(CH$_3$COO)$_2$·4H$_2$O (Sample 2), CoCO$_3$ (Sample 3) and Co(NO$_3$)$_2$·6H$_2$O (Sample 4).
Compound 2 (Sample 5), [Co(nia)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_4$][Co(H$_2$O)$_6$](SO$_4$)$_2$·2H$_2$O, is the product of the reaction between CoSO$_4$·6H$_2$O and nicotinamide.
