In this thesis, the possibility of using olive leaves extract as a natural dye for dyeing cotton fabrics was investigated. The aim of the research was to study the influence of different methods of extract preparation and dyeing conditions on the colour properties and fastness of dyed cotton fabrics. The olive leaves extract was prepared using three different procedures: maceration, boiling, and a combination of maceration and boiling. Both whole and ground leaves were used for preparation of extract, and in some cases, alkali (sodium carbonate) was added to the extract. Dyeing was performed under different conditions (concentration of extract, temperature and dyeing time) on unmordanted and mordanted samples. Classical metal mordants (aluminium, copper and iron sulphate) and bio-mordant (pomegranate extract) were used. The samples before and after repetitive washing were evaluated for their colour properties (CIELAB, K/S). The results showed that higher temperatures and longer dyeing times caused a shift in color values toward more intense red and yellow tones. Both bio- mordanting and traditional mordanting improved color depth, particularly with the use of iron sulfate. The colors of the cotton fabrics depended on the selected technological parameters and the type of mordant used, with shades ranging from light yellowish to dark reddish-brown or olive-yellow tones. Regardless of mordanting the samples exhibited relatively low colour fastness to washing. Based on the results, it was concluded that olive leaves extract represents a promising sustainable alternative in textile dyeing; however, further optimisation of the dyeing processes would be necessary to improve fastness properties.
