My main objective in writing my master's thesis is to investigate how the period of the Illyrian provinces has been represented in Slovenian history textbooks throughout different historical periods. As the school curriculum is always influenced by the current government, I will also focus on the question of whether and how the foreign policy relations of the countries in which Slovenians lived with France were reflected in the descriptions of the Illyrian Provinces in the textbooks of the time period. In the research for my master's thesis, I will use critical discourse analysis, which combines practices that examine texts at the linguistic level and social problems at the level of social sciences. By comparing the accounts of the Illyrian provinces in Slovenian school textbooks, I will use scholarly literature to investigate how the changes during the Illyrian provinces were presented to Slovenian students in school lessons. By analysing the different emphasis in the textbooks, I will try to discover whether there is a link between the representation of the Illyrian provinces and the foreign policy orientation of the national authorities in each specific time period. Using this method, I will therefore try to explain how social changes are manifested at the linguistic level. The critical discursive analysis reveals differences in the representation of the Illyrian provinces in the textbooks of the different periods analysed.
