Burnout has become one of the greatest challenges of modern society, as it is increasingly present in professional as well as personal life. Burnout is a state of total physical as well as mental exhaustion. It develops as a consequence of long-term stress, overload and exhaustion. Burnout and perfectionism are closely related, especially in situations involving high demands, set by person itself or by others. Failing to meet these demands can lead to elevated stress levels, feelings of failure, and disappointment.
In the master thesis we studied burnout in the light of perfectionism. Theoretical part explores professional and scientific literature on burnout and perfectionism, including their origins, theoretical models and development over time. In addition, we reviewed various empirical studies which examined the causes and consequences of both phenomena in different populations and circumstances. This comprehensive review allowed us to better understand the relationship between perfectionism and burnout and to understand the key factors that influence their origin.
In the empirical part, we conducted a study on a sample of 446 participants, examining the relationship between perfectionism and burnout, as well as the role of gender, age, and education in this context. The results showed a high positive correlation between perfectionism and burnout - the higher level of perfectionism, the higher the burnout. We also found out statistically significant difference between genders in the occurrence of perfectionism and burnout. However, age and education were not statistically significantly associated with the level of burnout.
