In my thesis, I focused on the amendment of the Law on Employment, Self-employed and Work of Foreigners, adopted in 2023, which reduced the waiting period for a work permit for asylum seekers from 9 months to 3 months. In the first part of the thesis, I introduced the concept of the word refugee, how it differs or does not differ from the concepts of the words migrant, illegalized refugee and asylum seeker. I also presented the history of the use of refugees as a labour or reserve labour force on the labour market and current data on their working lives. The last part of the paper was dedicated to anti-racist social work and to Ambasada Rog, the migrant workers' organisation where I conducted the interviews.
In the empirical part, I then presented the findings of the research, which show that the change in the law has had a positive impact on the lives of refugees in Slovenia, as well as on Ambasada Rog itself. However, it also emerged that refugees still face barriers accessing the labour market, as well as the presence of pervasive exploitation and broader economic changes that are reflected in the working lives of refugees.
