In my diploma thesis, I focused on the preparation of zinc(II) coordination compounds containing both picolinate (the anion of picolinic acid) and ethanolamine. At the same time, I investigated the quinaldinate/ethanolamine reaction system. As the starting reagent, I used Zn(pic)$_2$, which I prepared from zinc(II) oxide and picolinic acid. Under various reaction conditions, I isolated [Zn(pic)$_2$(ea)]. In this complex, ethanolamine is coordinated in a bidentate chelating manner through the amine nitrogen and hydroxyl oxygen atoms to the zinc(II) ion. The obtained compounds were analysed using infrared spectroscopy. The results contribute to a better understanding of the influence of solvent, temperature, and starting reagents on the synthesis of zinc(II) coordination compounds with ethanolamine.
