In my thesis, I examine the attitudes of preschool teachers towards the role of the librarian in the linguistic development of the preschool child. In the introductory part of the theoretical work, I defined the linguistic development of the preschool child, which I then divided into the pre-linguistic and linguistic periods. In the following, I described the milestones of the child's language and named some of the factors that have an important influence on the child's language development. I have also focussed on and described literature, literacy and library education in kindergarten. I have also paid special attention to the library and book corners and to conclude the theoretical part I have described the important role of the preschool teacher and the librarian in promoting children's language development.
In the empirical study, I used an anonymous questionnaire to investigate preschool teachers' views on the importance of the librarian for children's language development. 73 preschool teachers from Dolenjska kindergartens participated in the study. The results showed that the preschool teachers consider the role of the librarian to be very important for the child's preschool years.
Educators also rated the role of the librarian as very important in supporting the child's language development by planning language activities. The survey thus shows that the librarian needs to be trained and educated to work with preschool children and then use their knowledge to provide information and recommend appropriate materials. Many preschool teachers are also aware of the importance of book corners in the playroom and know that they should regularly visit the library with a group of children to provide literature and book education.
