The thesis analyses the English and Slovenian translations of cultural references from the novel El amor en los tiempos del cólera by Gabriel García Márquez. The aim of the research is to determine which translation strategies were used by the translators and how successfully they conveyed the cultural connotations of the original text. The theoretical part is based on concepts from comparative literature and contemporary translation studies (Newmark, Venuti), with a special focus on the intercultural role of the translator. In the practical part, selected examples of cultural references are classified according to Newmark’s typology of cultural terms (ecology, material and social culture, organisations, customs, gestures, and habits). The translation of cultural references is presented as a key element of intercultural mediation, requiring a multilayered and contextualised approach.
