In my thesis, I explored the expressive potential of the embroidery technique in the context of book illustration through both personal creative work and literature research.
In the theoretical part, I presented the picture book. I explained what a picture book is, and I listed and described various types of picture books that exist. I outlined the criteria for high-quality illustration and highlighted the aspects essential for the quality of wordless picture book illustrations. I investigated the ethnological aspect of embroidery in Slovenia, briefly outlining the history of this technique with a focus on the Gorenjska region. Using reference examples from Slovenian folk tradition, I showcased Slovenian iconography related to emroidery. I focused more specifically on Slovenian mythological folklore in order to analyse the story I chose for my own illustrations.
In the practical part of the thesis, I illustrated the Slovenian folk tale The Heathen Maiden on Prisank using embroidery. I described my process of designing a silent book, presenting all of the phases of my work as well as the completed piece. I analysed the created illustrations from both an iconographic and a visual-formal perspective. I experimented with various embroidery techniques, incorporating both traditional Slovenian methods as well as more contemporary approaches.
Based on my own findings, I described the limitations that embroidery presents in relation to illustration and meeting the criteria of quality illustration, while also highlighting the opportunities these limitations opened up in my work. I also analysed my own original work based on the presented criteria.
