Thesis examines the genesis, purpose, and reception of Slovenska začetnica (The Slovenian Primer), a textbook for first-grade primary school children created after the end of World War II. It was written by Vinko Möderndorfer, with illustrations contributed by Marij Pregelj, Slavko Pengov, Maksim Sedej, and Evgen Sajovic. The thesis also explores the circumstances under which the textbook was produced, involving the most prominent visual artists of the post-war generation. In addition to presenting and analyzing the content of the texts from the primer and identifying the authorship of individual illustrations, the thesis aims to place Slovenska začetnica within the broader context of Slovenian post-war children’s and youth literature, as well as within the realm of similar youth literature in the wider regional and European contexts.
