The thesis focuses on the sustainable development of the maritime sector, with an emphasis on technological adaptations introduced by selected shipping companies. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how the largest shipping companies are adapting to environmental challenges, which technologies they are implementing, and what impact these adaptations have on their competitiveness and long-term strategies.
The first part of the thesis presents maritime transport, with an emphasis on container transport, as a key part of world trade. The central part delves into the relationship between maritime transport and the environment, discusses the impact of legislation, and highlights the importance of developing and introducing new technologies to meet environmental standards and goals.
The final part of the thesis is dedicated to the analysis of five selected shipping companies: MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Evergreen. Their sustainable measures, technological solutions, and a comparison of efficiency and approaches to achieving sustainability goals are presented.
It was found that the differences in the intensity of adopting new technologies arise mainly from the cost accessibility of technologies and the strategic orientations of individual shipowners. The thesis also highlights the importance of technological development not only for reducing the negative impact on the environment but also for improving competitiveness in the maritime industry.
