In my master's thesis, I explore the experiences of informal caregivers of elderly people in the area of the administrative unit of Slovenska Bistrica. I chose this topic due to the current challenges related to population ageing and demographic changes. The number of elderly individuals is steadily increasing, which consequently leads to a growing demand for care services. The number of care services often prove insufficient, some family members find themselves in the role of informal caregivers. As my own family has had experience with caring for a relative, this topic holds personal significance for me. In the theoretical part of my thesis I highlight some topics that are connected with elderly care, such as aging of society, intergenerational coexistence, social networks in old age, long-term care, community-based elderly care, informal care and caregivers, and social work with the elderly and their caregivers.
My research is qualitative and empirical. I collected data through a semi-structured interview, with the help of a semi-standardized questionnaire. The population represent people which were, at the time of the survey, informal caregivers of elderly people (65 years or older) and reside within the Slovenska Bistrica administrative unit. The population also includes informal caregivers who previously cared for elderly individuals, provided that the caregiving ended no more than two years prior the research. Because I couldn’t study the whole population, I used a sample that included 11 people. In my research I included the following topics: information about caregiving, where I researched for whom the caregivers provide care and for how long, the types of assistance provided, where did they get the information about caregiving, who supports them in their role; changes in life because of providing care, which adjustments were necessary; challenges, distress and obstacles they had to overcome and what are the strategies they used to overcome them; support for elderly people in the local community, including satisfaction with elderly care services at the community level, suggestions for improvement, ways to support informal caregivers; positive aspects of caregiving.
