This master’s thesis is the result of research into the connections between lace-like structures, digital art and advanced 3D printing technology. It focuses on exploring the potential of direct-to-textile 3D printing and the search for design solutions that combine intuitive, spontaneous doodle drawings with structural qualities of traditional lace. The visual inspiration of the patterns emerges from a personal creative process rooted in freehand line drawing.
The theoretical part begins with a brief overview of the history of traditional lace, followed by an in-depth analysis of how lace-like structures have influenced contemporary design across various fields. I continue by exploring the technology of direct-to-textile 3D printing, including its challenges and its application in the field of design. Doodle art is introduced as both a visual and conceptual source of inspiration for developing playful, line-based patterns.
The experimental part builds upon this research and includes the development of digital patterns, 3D modeling, and testing of direct 3D printing on various textile substrates. Different structures, densities, thicknesses, and layouts are tested, with the aim of creating technically viable and visually interesting patterns that maintain the lightness and aesthetic finesse characteristic of lace. All findings obtained through the experimental part are presented in the Results and Discussion section.
This master’s thesis is a technical investigation into the use of modern technologies and a personal exploration of how intuitive drawing, enhanced by digital tools, can lead to the creation of unique structures and open new directions for further design development and application.
