My master's thesis aimed to explore the experiences of volunteer workers who work with the seriously ill and dying. The aim of the research was to gain direct insight into the motivation of volunteers and their perceptions of their role in working with seriously ill and dying people. I wanted to explore the main perceived benefits and challenges of the work, how volunteers perceive the psychological and emotional impact of the work and how they cope with it. The study involved 11 participants, one male and 10 female. 5 volunteers worked in hospital care and 6 within an association, where patients are most often accompanied at home. I conducted semi-structured interviews with all participants and analysed them using thematic analysis. I found that volunteers are often motivated to work in this field by their own experience of loss, but also as a result of altruistic motives and the desire to make meaning of their own lives and leisure time. Volunteers perceive their role in the context of patient/user care primarily as social and emotional support, focused on the psychological well-being of the patient/user and complementary to other aspects of treatment. Overall, volunteering with the seriously ill and dying is a very positive experience for volunteers, which they perceive to have had a significant impact on their lives. Working with the seriously ill and dying gives volunteers the opportunity to grow as individuals and increases their tolerance, acceptance of difference and sense of gratitude. The negative aspects of the work are perceived by patients much less than the positive ones, and are mostly reported in the context of feelings of insecurity or unpleasant feelings after the loss of a patient. The interplay between the volunteer's personal factors, external factors and organisational factors is crucial for coping with the unpleasant effects of work. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for the design of new research in this area and as a guideline for the design of effective volunteer training and onboarding.
