This master's thesis explains the horizontal directional drilling technology in more detail. In the first part of the thesis, we present the drilling itself and individual phases through which we demonstrated the operation of this trenchless method. The machine technology and its principle of operation, as well as the basic principle of operation of the entire system, are also presented in more detail. The first part of the master's thesis fully covers the theoretical part and the technological part of the horizontal directional drilling technology.
The second part of the master's thesis is based on a financial analysis and comparison of constructing a transmission gas pipeline in an urban environment with horizontal drilling and with classic excavation. The analyses present in more detail the necessary financial resources and work inventories for the construction of a transmission gas pipeline in an urban environment. The analysis was made on the basis of an actual project called "Transmission gas pipeline M5/R51 Vodice – TE-TOL" and was implemented in Ljubljana in 2021. The second part also describes the transmission gas pipeline, its main characteristics and technical guidelines for the Republic of Slovenia.
For the sole purpose of comparing classic excavation and horizontal directional drilling in the construction of gas pipelines in an urban environment, we compared a part of the project, i.e. a section on Bratislavska cesta in Ljubljana. Based on the project data and relevant assumptions, we showed that classic excavation would not be economically justified in this case. Performing classic excavation would require more financial resources, more time and more people to perform individual tasks.
