The interface for adding questions is an extremely important functionality in online survey tools, as it is repeatedly used during the survey creation process. This interface contains all question types that a particular tool offers. The question type lists can be grouped or ungrouped. In the case of a large number of question types in an ungrouped and unstructured list, the problem of presenting the whole set of questions in an intuitive way can arise, and in the case of too many groups, the process may require too many additional clicks. In this context, the main objective of the master thesis is to provide a starting point for the redesign of the interface for adding questions in the specific environment of the 1KA online survey tool. Two empirical methods were used. First, we systematically reviewed a set of 22 comparable or competing tools, where we identified 13 characteristics describing the appearance and functionalities of each reviewed interface. Next, we conducted a card sorting method, where five participants sorted and renamed 37 question types. The aim was to create meaningful groupings that reflect the mental models of the users. The review of tools highlighted a number of good design choices, while the card sorting method showed that the current structure of the groups in the 1KA interface does not match the mental models of the users. Based on all the results, we have developed the elements for the 1KA interface redesign plan, which includes 10 groups and 38 question types.
