The thesis explores the challenges of translating culture-specific terminology and neologisms in the manga Jujutsu Kaisen from Japanese into English.
The research addresses the issue of translation consistency and the differing approaches of official translation and fan-made translations, also called scanlation. Chapters 2 and 3 offers a historical overview of manga translation, highlighting the evolution of translation practices and the current state of terminology use in the manga industry. Chapter 4 outlines the theoretical foundations of translation studies, focusing on the principles relevant to translating culturally embedded terms. Chapter 5 introduces the study’s subject matter and analytical methodology. This study compares translations made by Viz Media with those made by scanlation groups such as TCB Scans, Jaimini’s Box, and Absquatulate Scans, and analyses the translation strategies employed. Chapter 6 presents a detailed analysis, divided into two sections: translation types and translation strategies. Each section evaluates the handling of key terms through linguistic analysis and contextual examination. Chapter 7 discusses the findings of the analysis and their implications for future translation efforts and the importance of maintaining cultural fidelity in translated works. Finally, the Appendix lists, with a summary structural analysis, all 127 terms studied in the thesis together with all their different translations.
