Introduction: Congenital anomalies are conditions of prenatal origin present at birth. They can affect the health, development and survival of the child. They can be divided into three groups according to the cause: genetic, environmental and multifactorial; the latter being the consequence of interactions between the genetic and environmental factors. The severity of these anomalies varies; some do not affect survival, while others may lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or death in the early postnatal period. Congenital hand anomalies are clinically challenging due to their heterogeneous nature, as the individual cases vary widely in anatomical defects, severity and functional impairment. Sometimes this requires multiple surgical interventions or therapies. A multidisciplinary approach and careful long-term planning of treatment are needed to achieve optimal results and a high quality of patients’ lives. Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to present the role of the perioperative nurse in the operative management of child with congenital hand abnormalities and to present the specificities of the surgical treatment of child in operating room. Methods: The thesis is based on the descriptive method of research. A review of scientific and professional literature in Slovene and English was carried out. The literature was obtained through the Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana. MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL, COBIB.SI databases and Mendeley, Libgen and ScienceDirect search engines were used. Results: Child with congenital hand anomalies undergo a variety of surgical procedures, and the perioperative nurse must take into account their chronological age and stage of development in order to tailor the approach accordingly. Safe perioperative nursing care for children begins with a thorough pre-operative assessment of the child and their parents or guardians. The perioperative nurse should keep the child safe throughout the perioperative period by ensuring correct positioning on the operation table, reducing anxiety and fear, taking measures to prevent infection and maintaining normothermia Discussion and conclusion: Congenital hand anomalies include a variety of conditions with varying degrees of disability that affect the physical appearance and cognitive and social functions of the child. The perioperative nurse should have in-depth knowledge and experience to ensure safety and quality of care according to perioperative standards. In perioperative care, it is important that the perioperative nurse carefully monitors position of the child on the operating table, prevents hypothermia, uses the equipment in the operating room correctly, carries out activities to prevent infections and reduces fear and anxiety in the child and parents or guardians. Holistic care should also involve the child’s family, providing appropriate information and adapting procedures according to the child’s age.
