Because of the vulnerability of satellite navigation, it is necessary, especially in the proximity of land and navigational dangers, to constantly verify the accuracy of the ship’s position. The master’s thesis describes navigational equipment and land-based objects that allow us to determine the ship’s position, and their errors and limitations.
Navigational equipment allows the measurement of directions to and distances from exposed parts of the coast, lighthouses, buoys and radar/AIS beacons, while the ship’s position may be determined by different methods of plotting position lines onto the nautical chart.
